WORCESTER, Mass. – One hundred and ten Holy Cross students will depart from Worcester on March 6, to spend their spring break participating in the Appalachia Service Project. During this week of service, they will assist communities with home repair, clean up, paint, visit schools, call on the elderly, work in thrift shops and learn about the culture of the region.
This project, which has been in existence at Holy Cross for more than 20 years, includes 10 sites in Virginia, Kentucky, and Maine. There were approximately 150 applications for 93 openings.
The budget for the 1999 project is $31,000. In order to raise this money, students sell candy, pay a fee, and make fund-raising appeals, in addition to receiving a grant from the College.
The program, administered by Rev. Jim Hayes, S.J., of the Holy Cross Chaplains' Office, is being led this year by fourth-year students Laura Marcucio and Joe Keen.
