WORCESTER, Mass. – David Ferry, a well-known poet and translator, will give a reading on Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. in the Browsing Room in Dinand Library at Holy Cross.
Ferry, the Sophie Chantal Hart Professor of English Emeritus at Wellesley College, is the author of several books of poetry, On the Way to the Island; A Letter, and Some Photographs; Strangers: A Book of Poems; Dwelling Places: Poems and Translations; and Of No Country I Know: New and Selected Poems and Translations. He is also the author of The Limits of Morality: An Essay on Wordsworth's Major Poems.
He has translated The Odes of Horace and The Eclogues of Virgil and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1993 for his translation of Gilgamesh: A New Rendering in English Verse.
Ferry has been the recipient of several awards, including the Teasdale Prize for notable poetic achievement by an American Poet and the 60th Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets for distinguished poetic achievement.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Amherst and received both his master's degree and Ph.D. from Harvard University.
The reading is free and open to the public.
