National Hunger and Homelessness Week 2000

Monday, Nov. 13—Friday, Nov. 17

Join your fellow Holy Cross students as they raise awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness during the College's annual week of events, sponsored by the Student Coalition on and Hunger and Homelessness (SCOHAH), a 120-member organization run through the Chaplains' Office.

The schedule of events is as follows:

Monday, Nov. 13 - Student Clothing Drive; Clothes will be collected in the residence halls and from off-campus apartments by student volunteers. The clothing will be donated to a Worcester shelter.

Tuesday, Nov. 14 - Hunger Banquet at 5:30 p.m. in Kimball Dining Hall; Participants will be divided into three classes, representing the world's population. The highest class, about 10% of the people, will get a normal Kimball meal. The middle class will get rice and vegetables, and the lowest, poorest majority will get broth and bread. Through this exercise, participants can experience the skewed global distribution of wealth. Wednesday, Nov. 15 - Homeless Solidarity Sleepout on the Hogan Campus Center lawn; Starting at 10 p.m., students will arrive at the lawn to sleep in only sleeping bags, blankets and cardboard boxes that will be provided by SCOHAH. A representative from Worcester's Catholic Worker House will lead a discussion about why 750,000 Americans are homeless each night. This event is designed to promote solidarity with those individuals less fortunate than us. Participants will leave the lawn at 8 a.m. the next morning. Thursday, Nov. 16 - Panel on "Hunger in America: Seeking Solutions" Professors Cicovacki, Lembcke and Nickoloff, along with Dave McMahon of Dismas House and the Massachusetts Green Party, will speak on the contemporary problem of hunger at 4 p.m. in Room 519 of the Hogan Campus Center. Refreshments will be served.

Friday, Nov. 17 - Oxfam Hunger Fast; Holy Cross students will have the opportunity to donate money from their meal plan to benefit the world’s hungry.
