Lecture on Free Speech and the Internet on Campus to be held at Holy Cross

Richard M. Freije, Corporate Attorney, Global Knowledge Network Inc., will give a lecture on free speech and the Internet on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 4 p.m. in Room 359 of Swords Hall. Freije's lecture, entitled "The First Amendment, the Internet and the Regulation of Speech on Campus," is free and open to the public.

A graduate of the Holy Cross class of 1981, Freije will speak on many colleges' recent attempts to limit or control students' use of the Internet. Such regulation, he believes, cannot be completely consistent with the conflicting philosophies of freedom of expression for each individual and the imposition of some duty to community.

His talk will touch upon the manner in which the First Amendment is being interpreted in the context of the Internet, the ability of a school to regulate its students use of the Internet consistent with the values of free expression, and the ability of a school to prevent harassment.

This event is sponsored by the math and computer science department.
