Holy Cross Listed Among Best Division I Schools for Graduating Athletes

In a study released recently by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (N.C.A.A.), Holy Cross ranks 20th among the 318 colleges and universities in Division I for the best graduation rates of its athletes.

Of the 100 scholarship athletes who were enrolled at Holy Cross from 1990-91 to 1993-94, 82% earned their degrees within six years. In addition, Holy Cross was one of only seven colleges nationwide that graduated all of the black male basketball players who were enrolled during the same period. This figure contrasts dramatically with national statistics, where only 34% of black male basketball players earned their degrees.

"Our coaches pursue good athletes, but a major criteria is that the prospective student-athlete must be seriously interested in academics. Otherwise, they wouldn’t survive at Holy Cross," says athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr. '76. "While we are proud of our graduation rate, it doesn’t surprise us. It’s the result of pursuing high caliber student-athletes."
