Curator at Worcester Art Museum to Speak at Holy Cross

Dr. Christine Kondoleon, Curator of Greek and Roman Art at the Worcester Art Museum, will deliver a lecture on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in Room 519 of the Hogan Campus Center. Kondoleon’s lecture is free and open to the public.

Set beneath the mountain where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments, the monastery was built by command of the Emperor Justinian between 527 and 564 A.D. to house the bones of St. Catherine of Alexandria. The Monastery has been one of the world's great centers of religious pilgrimage for over 15 centuries. Inside its walls, the monastery houses an impressive library of ancient manuscripts and icons.

One of the greatest draws to the monastery is a 6th-century church reputed to lie directly on the site of the burning bush. This biblical story, from the Book of Exodus, depicts how God talked to Moses from within a burning bush, telling him that He would deliver Israel from Egypt. Although the bush was on fire, it did not burn up. The bush at the monastery is believed to be the actual plant from the Old Testament.

This lecture is sponsored by the College's Classics Department and the Hellenic Arts Society of Worcester.
