Holy Cross Professor Publishes Book On Women's Sleep

WORCESTER, Mass. – Amy R. Wolfson, a professor in the psychology department at Holy Cross, has recently published her new book, "The Women's Book of Sleep" (New Harbinger Publications, 2001).

Created for women of all ages, "The Women's Book of Sleep" helps readers manage the physiological and psychological factors that can wreak havoc on their sleep schedules. Wolfson focuses on experiences unique to women, like the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childrearing and menopause, that can dramatically affect the quality of female sleep.

Wolfson reviews a variety of intervention strategies and draws on her expertise as a woman's sleep specialist to offer advice on what really works. The book's appendix introduces readers to sleep disorder resources, including local centers and sleep associations.

The book also explains the natural changes in sleep cycles that occur from infancy to menopause. Sleep stages, sleep need and healthy sleep patterns are discussed throughout. At the end of each chapter a concise list of "sleep smart strategies" shows readers how to counter the problems covered in the preceding pages.

"The Women's Book of Sleep" is now available at bookstores or from the publisher by phone at 800/748-6273, or online at www.newharbinger.com.

A member of the Holy Cross faculty since 1992, Wolfson is an associate professor of psychology and director of the Women's Studies Program. She received her Ph.D at Washington University, and is currently co-chair of the Women in Sleep and Rhythm Research group of the Sleep Research Society.
