Holy Cross Deaf Studies Events

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sponsored by the Holy Cross American Sign Language (ASL) program, the following deaf studies events are free and open to the public:

Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.?The 8th annual "It's a Deaf, Deaf World" interactive workshop will take place on the third floor lobby of the Hogan Campus Center.  There will be no spoken language used at the workshop so that hearing people can communicate with the deaf using a variety of signing methods, tour booths set up to represent situations deaf people might regularly face, and understand the daily frustrations faced by deaf people in a hearing world.  Pre-registration is required.

Tuesday, Sept. 25, and Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m.-Showings of the film "Sound and Fury" in Room 102 of Stein Hall.  This film deals with the controversial questions raised by the development of cochlear implants which can restore hearing for those with congenital deafness.

Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.-"Cochlear Implant: Issues and Choices," lecture by John Christiansen, professor and chair of the sociology department at Gallaudet University, in Room 519 of the Hogan Campus Center.

Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m.-Deaf Women-Health and Fitness Workshop with Maryellen Lentz in Room 401 of the Hogan Campus Center.

Monday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.-Fourth Annual Deaf Services and Technology Expo in the Ballroom of the Hogan Campus Center.  Co-sponsored by the Massachusetts State Association of the Deaf, the Northeast Technical Assistance Center, and Mass Relay.  This event is a consumer trade show that will provide an opportunity for open exchange of information, education, marketing and networking for Deaf and hard of hearing members of the community; professionals, researchers, teachers and students.  It will feature vendors of assistive devices and educational materials, providers of community services, educational programs, recreational organizations and businesses.
