One of Shakespeare's final plays, The Tempest artfully combines tragedy, comedy and romance. In the play, Prospero, the hero, conjures a tempest to bring a group of European nobles together on a mystic island where they confront magical forces and attempt to rid themselves of the evil that is present in their relationships with one another. The production features Mel Cobb, a professional Shakespearean actor from the renowned theatrical group, Shakespeare & Company, in the role of Prospero.

Set on a South Sea island, Holy Cross' production of The Tempest features original music and choreography by Visiting Professor Desak Made Suarti Laksmi, a teacher at STSI, the performing arts college in Bali. In this role, she uniquely synthesizes Balinese puppetry, dance and Gamelan music with the words of William Shakespeare

The play is directed by Professor Edward Isser, recipient of American College Theatre Festival Artistic Achievement Award in Directing for his Holy Cross production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure. Isser is also the creator of the Interactive Shakespeare Project, an interactive Web site dedicated to teaching Shakespeare: http://www.holycross.edu/shakespeare

The themes of evil and forgiveness coincide with the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture's conference, "The Anatomy of Evil," held the same weekend at the College. Participants of the conference will attend a showing of the play as part of their exploration of evil.

The Tempest is the capstone event of a regional undergraduate Shakespeare conference being sponsored by Clark University. This massive production includes over 50 Holy Cross students as actors, dancers and musicians.
