Holy Cross Remembers Alumni Lost in Sept. 11 Attacks

To: Holy Cross Campus Community From: Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J. President of Holy Cross

The College has planned a day of events to commemorate those killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 9:18 a.m., the Holy Cross community will gather in front of Fenwick Hall for a flag raising ceremony and a wreath laying to be conducted by the NROTC. Paul Covino of the Chaplains' Office will offer a brief prayer. The ceremony will close with the playing of Taps.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel.

At 4:00 p.m. there will be a panel discussion in the Ballroom of the Hogan Campus Center, where members of the faculty will offer brief reflections on the events of Sept. 11 before opening up the conversation to the audience.

Due to the severe winds, the Interfaith Candelight Prayer Vigil will begin in the Mary Chapel at 6:30 p.m. The service will end with a procession to Memorial Plaza. At 6:30 p.m. the community will gather for an interfaith candlelight prayer service. The service will take place at Memorial Plaza, where, last March 11, the College dedicated a bronze plaque bearing the names of its seven lost alumni as a permanent memorial. The service will consist of readings from various world religions, prayer and music. There will also be time for quiet reflection. A candlelight vigil will follow the service. The rain location for this event is Mary Chapel.

Saturday, Sept. 14, has been designated as a "Day of Community Healing." A memorial service in memory of Jonathan Duchatellier '05 and other members of the Holy Cross community that have passed away will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Memorial Plaza. Speakers will include Jonathan's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Duchatellier.

A picnic for faculty, staff, students and families will take place on the Kimball quad immediately following the memorial service. The Holy Cross Chapel Choir and the Holy Cross College Choir will provide music for the event.

I ask that you join me and the entire campus community at this series of commemorative events, in the spirit of reflection and prayerful remembrance.
