Men's Studies Scholar Michael Kimmel to Speak at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – On Monday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. in 103 Haberlin Hall, men's studies scholar Michael Kimmel will offer a lecture titled "Mars and Venus, or Planet Earth: Men and Women in a New Millennium." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Michael Kimmel, professor of sociology at SUNY Stony Brook, has received international recognition for his work on men and masculinity. His written work has appeared in dozens of magazines and scholarly journals. He has also published numerous books, including Manhood in America: A Cultural History (Free Press, 1996), The Politics of Manhood (Temple University Press, 1996) and The Gendered Society (Oxford University Press, 2000), which has been hailed as the touchstone work for courses in gender studies.

One of the most distinguished men's studies scholars and educators in the United States, Kimmel's sociology of masculinity course is one of the few college courses in the nation that examines men's lives from a pro-feminist perspective. His teaching has been featured in numerous newspaper and magazine articles, and on television shows such as The Today Show, CNN, Smithsonian World and Crossfire.

As the spokesperson for the National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS), Kimmel has lectured at over 200 colleges and universities. He has run numerous workshops for campus groups on preventing sexual harassment and implementing gender equity, date and acquaintance rape, sexual assault, and the changing relations between women and men.

This event is co-sponsored by the sociology and anthropology department, the women's studies program, the Women's Forum, the Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies, the Dean of the College, and the Dean of Students.
