Holy Cross to Hold Workshop on Music for the Deaf

WORCESTER, Mass. – On Saturday, October 26 from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Rehm Library, the College of the Holy Cross will host a workshop titled "Music That Is Seen: A Spiritual Interpretation." This event is open to the public for a fee of $26. Registration deadline is October 16.

The workshop is designed to show how an ASL interpreter can bring a meaningful and spiritual interpretation of a variety of today's music styles to the deaf. Information on the role of the interpreter and on the various musical materials that can be interpreted will be provided. There will also be time set aside for participants to practice interpreting various selections.

Rev. William F. Ross III will be facilitating the workshop. He has been interpreting for over 16 years and holds dual certification from the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf. Rev. Ross is currently employed as a staff/community interpreter with the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He has presented nationwide and has several publications to his credit.

Made possible by a generous grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc., this event is part five in a series of workshops related to religion in the deaf community. It will be presented in spoken English. Please make requests for ASL interpretation by October 16.

This event is co-sponsored by the Holy Cross deaf studies program, Holyoke Community College and the Northeastern University Interpreter Education Project.
