Cantor Art Gallery Presents "Portraits: Yesterday and Today"

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross presents "Portraits: Yesterday and Today," with artists Ruth Henshaw Bascom, Laura Chasman, Eliza Goodridge, Sarah Goodridge and Barry Hazard, from November 13 through December 18, 2002. An opening reception for this exhibition will be held, Wednesday, November 13 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the Cantor Art Gallery.

"Portraits: Yesterday and Today," brings together the work of contemporary portrait artists Laura Chasman and Barry Hazard with mid-19th century portrait artists Ruth Henshaw Bascom and sisters Eliza and Sarah Goodridge. Although divided by over 150 years and vast amounts of technology, these five Massachusetts artists all share a similar approach to creating a portrait: the careful hand painted or drawn depiction of people they love and care about, their family members, friends and neighbors. Each of these five individuals make paintings or drawings that tell visual stories of their subjects in very different ways.

A series of public lectures in conjunction with the exhibition will be held at the Cantor Art Gallery:

  • Boston area artist, Laura Chasman will speak and show images of her ongoing series of portraits on Wednesday, November 13 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • New Jersey art historian Mary Eileen Fouratt will give a talk titled "Ruth Henshaw Bascom: A mid-19th Century Portrait Sketcher" on Tuesday, November 19 from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Artist Barry Hazard, also based in Boston, will speak and show slides about his recent series of portrait paintings of his family, friends, and his students from an inner city job training program on Wednesday, November 20 from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

"Portraits: Yesterday and Today/ Ruth Henshaw Bascom, Laura Chasman, Eliza Goodridge, Sarah Goodridge, Barry Hazard" is part of "Portraits!," a series of exhibitions, programs and events presented by Worcester cultural Coalition Members from September 2002- January 2003.
