Chitra to be Performed at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross theatre and music departments will present Chitra, a fusion chamber opera, on Feb. 7 and 8 at 8 p.m. in Fenwick Theatre at the College. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $7 for members of the Holy Cross Community. They can be obtained by calling the box office at (508) 793-2496. Fenwick Theatre is not handicapped accessible.

First performed to acclaim in 2000, Chitra, by composer Shirish Korde, of the music department, and director-librettist Lynn Kremer, of the theatre department, adapts a magical episode from the Hindu epic, The Mahabharata, as interpreted by the celebrated Indian writer Rabindranath Tagore. Chitra, daughter of the King of Manipur, has been brought up as a boy. She is proud of her manly prowess until she falls in love with the demigod Arjuna. The ensemble includes singer Maria Ferrante, dancers Nyoman Catra and Tara Ahmed, and tabla player Samir Chatterjee.
