Leonard Sulski Lecture at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The 10th annual Leonard C. Sulski Memorial Lecture in Mathematics will take place on Wednesday, April 2 at 8 p.m. in Room 519 of the Hogan Campus Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Professor Kathleen M. Shannon of Salisbury University, Salisbury Md., will give this year's lecture, titled "Pascal's Triangle, Cellular Automata and Serendipity: A Mathematical Tale."

Shannon is a mathematics professor and chair of the mathematics and computer science department at Salisbury University. Recently, she has been working on the PascGalois Project, a National Science Foundation (NSF) supported project aimed at helping undergraduate mathematics majors visualize many of the fundamentals concepts of abstract algebra. Her lecture will address some of the ideas developed through the project.

The annual mathematical lecture series is a tribute to Leonard C. Sulski who taught in the mathematics department at Holy Cross from 1965 until his death from leukemia in 1991. Shannon, a 1980 graduate of Holy Cross, was a student of Professor Sulski.

The lecture will be preceded by a dinner cosponsored by the mathematics and computer science department and the Mathematical Association of America. The dinner is open to the public for a price of $15. If you are interested in participating in the dinner, please contact Professor Thomas Cecil at 508.793.2719 or by e-mail at cecil@mathcs.holycross.edu by March 24.
