Holy Cross Students Honored with Big Brothers Big Sisters Community Service Award

During an awards ceremony held at Holy Cross on April 9, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Worcester County Inc honored three Holy Cross student organizations with its Community Service Award for mentoring success.

The honorees included members of the men's lacrosse team, for its John's Brothers program at Canterbury Street School; Student Programs for Urban Development (SPUD), for its Big Brothers Big Sisters program, also at Canterbury Street School; and the Deaf studies program for its Deaf mentoring program at the Accelerated Learning Laboratory (ALL) School.

Currently, there are over 90 Holy Cross students who volunteer their time as Big Brothers and Sisters for Worcester children. They spend an afternoon each week helping their Littles with homework, playing sports, doing crafts and forming friendships.

Many students have participated weekly since the program began three years ago. Others became involved as recently as January. Whenever possible, Big and Little mentoring pairs last throughout the students' time at Holy Cross.

Holy Cross Bigs said goodbye to their Littles for the summer with a field day at the Hart Center on Thursday, May 1.
