Holy Cross Theatre Department to Give Rare Performance of Shakespeare's Timon of Athens

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross theatre department will present Timon of Athens, one of the most rarely performed plays in the Shakespearean canon, from Thursday, Nov. 6 - Saturday, Nov. 8 and from Thursday, Nov. 13 - Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. in Fenwick Theatre. Don't miss this unique opportunity to see Timon performed.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $7 for members of the Holy Cross community. They may be obtained by calling the box office at (508) 793-2496. Fenwick Theatre is not handicapped accessible.

This important, yet often ignored, play tells the story of a fabulously wealthy man (Timon) who throws his fortune away on lavish parties, expensive gifts, and philanthropic acts. It is not until after his money is gone that he realizes he has mistaken patronage for friendship. The play is a biting, unadulterated examination of the human condition that forces the audience to reconsider notions of friendship, loyalty and the precariousness of status and success.

Set in the late 1930s, the Holy Cross production presents a world of gangsters, pimps and floozies who vie for money and status. The production promises to be both enlightening and exhilarating as the audience is taken on the roller coaster ride of Timon's rise and fall.

This Holy Cross performance is directed by Edward Isser, of the theatre department, who regularly produces Shakespeare on campus. Isser recently directed the popular production of Macbeth at Foothills Theatre in Worcester and will bring Romeo & Juliet to the Foothills stage in April 2004.
