Acclaimed Author and National Book Award Nominee Edward P. Jones '72 to Give a Reading at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Acclaimed author and Holy Cross alumnus Edward P. Jones ’72, recent National Book Award nominee for his novel The Known World, will give a reading at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 2 in Holy Cross’ Hogan Ballroom. The reading is free and open to the public.

Based on historical facts, The Known World, Jones’ first novel, tells the story of a former slave in antebellum Virginia who, upon gaining his freedom, purchases slaves to work for him. The subject of much praise, The New York Times called The Known World, “stunning - likely to win acclaim.” Booklist wrote, “This is a profoundly beautiful and insightful look at American slavery and human nature.”

Jones has taught fiction at Princeton University, George Mason University, and the University of Maryland. His work has appeared in numerous journals and magazines, including The Paris Review, Essence, and Ploughshares. An English major while at Holy Cross, Jones won the PEN/Hemingway Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award for his debut collection of short stories, Lost in the City.

Jones will be available to sign copies of his books following the reading.
