Holy Cross Walkers Raise $9,000 for Cancer Research

On Sunday, Sept. 26, nearly 150 members of the Holy Cross community laced up their sneakers and took to the streets in the 6th annual Walk to Cure Cancer.

The Holy Cross team joined over 7,000 others walkers from the local community in the five mile walk around beautiful Lake Quinsigamond. Although official totals have not yet been tallied, it is estimated the Holy Cross contingent contributed more than $9,000 to the effort. Overall, the Walk raised over $600,000 for cancer research at the UMASS Memorial Cancer Center.

A rewarding experience for all who participated, the Walk was a great way for Holy Cross friends and family to join together for a common and worthy cause.

Each Holy Cross walker wore a purple T-shirt bearing the names of parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends and loved ones, as a way to remember those who had passed away from cancer and to support and honor those who have survived or are still fighting. An initiative inspired by President Emeritus Rev. John Brooks, S.J., the "sea of purple shirts" drew many comments and kudos as the group made their way around the lake.

Many thanks to all walkers, sponsors and volunteers who participated in the Walk to Cure Cancer. Your efforts have helped make a difference in the fight against this most terrible of diseases.
