College in talks with City, professional team to play at Fitton Field

The College of the Holy Cross has announced its intent to proceed with talks with the City of Worcester and Worcester Professional Baseball LLC regarding a plan for the independent team - a member of the Canadian-American League - to play at Fitton Field beginning in late spring 2005.

The College believes that it is an exciting plan for the future of Worcester, and the Trustees and the Administration at Holy Cross have fully committed to exploring how to work as a partner in this venture.

It is an excellent opportunity - in the spirit of the UniverCity Partnership - to use our resources and work with our closest neighbors, the people of South Worcester, College Hill, and Quinsigamond Village to contribute to the entire City’s physical and economic well-being.

Education of students is and always will be our primary mission.  In exploring the plan to bring professional baseball to the City, Holy Cross is committed to ensuring that the venture will result in a family-oriented entertainment venue for Worcester area residents.  The College is also proceeding with talks with the understanding that this venture will not result in any scheduling or programmatic conflicts with our academic, athletic and student life programs; nor will it incur any additional financial burden on Holy Cross students, parents, faculty or staff.

All issues and details related to providing a full season of baseball games on Fitton Field - such as parking, vendor services, additional seating, lighting - will be addressed during talks with the City and Worcester Professional Baseball in the ensuing weeks.
