First Woman Bishop in the Episcopal Church to Speak at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Bishop Barbara Harris, the first woman bishop in the Episcopal Church (and in the Anglican Communion worldwide), will speak about her vocation in a talk titled "Challenges for Ministry Today" on Feb. 14 at 7:15 p.m. in the Rehm Library of Smith Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Bishop Harris was ordained to the diaconate in 1979 and ordained a priest in 1980. She served as a parish priest, chaplain to the Philadelphia County prisons, and as counsel to industrial corporations for public policy issues and social concerns.

In 1988, she was elected suffragan (assisting) bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts. One year later, she was consecrated a bishop, the first woman to be ordained to the episcopate in the worldwide Anglican Communion. Now retired as the bishop of Massachusetts, she continues to work in ministry in the Diocese of Washington, D.C.

The talk is part of the Lilly Vocation Discernment Initiative’s Lectures in Ministry Series, in which church leaders and ministers in a variety of ministries speak about their own vocations and the challenges they see the church needing to focus on in the 21st century.

The lecture is sponsored by the Center for Religion, Ethics and Culture.
