Holy Cross Fenwick Theatre Presents Faculty-Directed The Sea Gull

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Fenwick Theatre and the theatre department at the College of the Holy Cross will present Anton Chekhov’s The Sea Gull on April 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m. in Fenwick Theatre (O’Kane Hall). The production is directed by Steve Vineberg, professor of theatre and film at the College, using Ann Dunnigan’s elegant translation. Tickets are $7 for members of the Holy Cross community and $10 for the general public.

This lyrical late-19th century tragedy established Anton Chekhov among the ranks of the great modernist playwrights. Set by a lake in the Russian countryside, The Sea Gull is about young artists, passionate romantics on the brink of their careers and, like all of Chekhov’s plays, it’s equally about love lost and love unrequited, complacency and disenchantment, and the passing of time.

Vineberg, author of the recently published High Comedy in American Movies (Rowman and Littlefield Publishers), reviews films and theater regularly for The Boston Phoenix and The Threepenny Review. He has also been published in the New York Times, The Washington Post, Film Quarterly, American Film, Modern Review and Connoisseur, among others. A member of the Holy Cross faculty since 1985, Vineberg teaches classes in theatre history, film, American drama and political theatre.

Vineberg has directed a number of productions at Holy Cross, including Chekhov’s Three Sisters, The Marriage of Bette and Boo, Marco Polo Sings a Solo, The Eccentricities of a Nightengale, The House of Blue Leaves, The Threepenny Opera, Lydie Breeze and The Night of the Iguana.

The set is produced by Chris Markunas ’05; costumes by Kurt S. Hultgren, costume designer in the theatre department; and lighting by Barbara Craig, professor in the theatre department.
