Inner Workings

Science complex interior current focus of construction crews

The arrival of winter — and record-setting snowfall — hasn’t slowed construction of the Linda and Park B. Smith Laboratories at Holy Cross.

Construction of the new building in the science complex remains on schedule. Crews are currently working on the inside of the building, says Leonard Raymond, assistant director for construction in the Physical Plant department at Holy Cross.

All concrete slabs have been poured up to the roof and the building is temporarily covered in plastic sheathing for protection against winter elements, he says.

Crews are currently:

  • Erecting wall partitions.
  • Installing rough electrical wiring through the building.
  • Placing ductwork for the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system.
  • Installing the fire-protection system.

This work will continue into the spring. Construction of the four-story building is expected to be completed by January 2009. Immediately thereafter, top-to-bottom renovation of Haberlin Hall will begin. The 45-year-old building will be gutted and completely rebuilt, with an expected completion date of January 2010.
