Greater Media is the parent company of 23 AM and FM radio stations in Boston, Charlotte, Detroit, Philadelphia and New Jersey.  Radio Ink Magazine chose Smyth as “America’s Best Broadcaster” in 2005.  In addition, the publication has featured him as one of the “40 Most Powerful People in Radio” in 2001 and 2003-08. He was named “Radio Executive of the Year” by the publication in 2007.

Smyth joined Greater Media, Inc. in 1986 as the general manager of WMJX-FM in Boston, and was appointed vice president and general manager in 1987. Subsequent promotions moved him through positions of senior vice president and regional general manager, group vice president of radio, and chief operating officer. In October 2000, Smyth was named president and chief operation officer, and in March 2002 he was promoted to his current position.

After graduating from Holy Cross in 1975, Smyth started his broadcasting career as an account executive at WROR-FM in Boston. He worked there as general sales manager for about five years, until RKO General, the parent company of WROR, recruited him to direct sales operations at the New York station. He worked there until leaving in 1986 to work at Greater Media, Inc.

The Ciocca Office of Entrepreneurial Studies, founded in 2005 with funding from Arthur A. Ciocca ’59, introduces Holy Cross students to a range of business concepts, opportunities, and skills necessary for success. Alumni have a distinct role in the program, returning to campus for workshops, seminar, and lectures, and actively engaging in mentoring and networking opportunities for current students.
