Blog: College Historian Fr. Kuzniewski Muses on Holy Cross — Past and Present

Rich history, dynamic life on campus intermingle in journal entries

NAME Rev. Anthony Kuzniewski, S.J.

WHO HE IS A member of the Holy Cross faculty since 1974, Fr. Kuzniewski — or Fr. K as he’s referred to on campus — is a professor in the history department. He served as the chair of the department from 1990 to 1992, and received the Holy Cross Distinguished Teaching Award in 2002. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Marquette University, a master’s and a Ph.D. from Harvard, and a master’s of divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology in Chicago (Loyola University).

THE AUTHORITY ON HOLY CROSS HISTORY A veritable walking encyclopedia of all things Holy Cross, Fr. K is the author of The College of the Holy Cross: One Hundred Fifty Years (1993), Thy Honored Name: A History of The College of the Holy Cross, 1843 - 1994 (1999), and This Holy Cross (2002). He is also the author of Faith and Fatherland: The Polish Church War in Wisconsin, 1896 - 1918 (1981).

WHY HE’S BLOGGING “I have so many friends in the Holy Cross community, including thousands of former students, many couples who did me the honor of asking me to preside at their weddings, parents of students and former students. Because of my work on the College history, I’m eager to reflect on the present in light of the past.”

WHAT HE’S BLOGGING ABOUT “I plan to blog about the College’s history. There is also pride in our students to talk about, experiences with our student-athletes, episodes in the life of the institution — the reopening of Haberlin, the loss of the campus bell, the late Senator Kennedy as a political heir of Holy Cross’ first great political figure, Senator David I. Walsh (Class of 1893).”

A TRUE CRUSADER “About Holy Cross, I love the physical setting and the human atmosphere; and I’m absolutely wedded to the values that propel our enterprise. As a whole, our students and alums take very seriously the commitment to live as women and men for others. As they do so, they validate and uphold our unique position in American higher education.”
