Worcester Native Studying Art in Vietnam

After graduating from the College of the Holy Cross in 2009, John Vo began work on a portfolio dedicated to Vietnamese art. The philosophy and studio art major submitted it as part of his application for a Fulbright grant and was awarded the opportunity to paint and study contemporary and traditional Vietnamese art in his parents’ birthplace of Vietnam.

Vo, who has been in Ho Chi Mihn city since September, told Pulse Magazine that he's “trying to immerse myself in the culture and experience what it means to live in Vietnam. Currently, I am taking classes in silk painting and wood block printing at the University [San-Art].”

In addition to working on his art, Vo is using the opportunity to learn more about his parents' roots. “When I was a kid my parents use to tell me about their lives in Vietnam, about family and friends,” Vo told Pulse. “But because I was born in the United States, these memories seem like myths. I felt that by going to Vietnam I could get an understanding of who my parents are and who I am. This, in combination with painting made the choice for me.”
