"New Coupon Biz In Town"

Worcester Business Journal

"Social commerce" made its way into Worcester last month, when the online 'deal of the day' company Groupon, launched a Worcester-region site. The College's athletics department didn't wait long to take advantage of the opportunity to get more fans at their home basketball games.

Worcester Business Journal spoke with Jennifer Whipple, athletic fundraising coordinator, about a recent Groupon promotion to sell tickets to five games during students' winter break. Whipple told the reporter that "she noticed other school athletic departments offering the online coupons through deal websites and thought that during the winter break when the stands are a little emptier would be a perfect time to sell the buy-one-get-one-free coupons."

With more than 50 million users around the world, Groupon is a rapidly expanding company that negotiates huge discounts with local businesses contingent upon the number of people who sign up for the deal. Holy Cross has sold more than 100 packages for upcoming games.
