Holy Cross hosted nearly 600 students from 20 high schools across New England during the College’s 39th annual Classics Day on April 14.
The day featured a series of events relating to the study of Roman culture, including a trivia certamen (competition, in Latin), costume contest, and a “chariot race.”
The race, held around the Hart Recreation Center, provided an adrenaline rush for the students. Each school created a chariot that was four feet high and included four wheels. Many were covered in Latin phrases and classical accessories, such as gold and paintings of gods and goddesses from Roman or Greek mythology. Each team consisted of a rider and student “horses.”
The purpose of the day is to encourage students to study Latin and ancient civilization in college, and offers Holy Cross a chance to showcase one of the finest classics departments in the country.
