Some 200 student leaders, athletic teams and alumni helped move in 756 first-year students to their residence halls on Aug. 27, hours before the remnants of Hurricane Irene arrived in central Massachusetts.

The Holy Cross campus did not sustain any damage during the weather event, which was downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it arrived to the Bay State.

Before members of the new class and their parents said their goodbyes, they gathered for the formal inauguration of the new academic year at the Mass of the Holy Spirit.

First-year students are currently participating in a program of welcoming events, known as Fall Gateways Orientation. The events are designed to ease transition to college life by introducing students to the wide variety of academic, spiritual, community-building, and social programs available at the College.

The members of the Class of 2015 were selected from a record 7,353 applicants, an increase of about six percent over last year.

Stay tuned for video coverage of move-in day.
