"The Time for Science"

Inside Higher Ed

In an opinion piece for Inside Higher Ed, College of the Holy Cross Chemistry Professor Richard Herrick warns against a new debt deal that could dramatically decrease financial support for science beginning in 2013.  Instead, he argues that science is the key to long-term economic recovery.

"Think about the major challenges that face our society today," he writes. "Answering the country's energy needs, climate change problems, and the increasing costs of health care will require new advances in science -- which, in turn, will create jobs."

Despite limited resources, Herrick challenges the government and individual institutions to make significant investments in science education now, and points to Holy Cross' recently completed a $64 million dollar, state-of-the-art Integrated Science Complex, as an example.
