"Opening My Ears in El Salvador"

Connections

Margaret Freije, associate dean and associate professor of mathematics at the College of the Holy Cross, reveals the life-changing impact of her trip to El Salvador in the Association of Jesuit Colleges & Universities’ Connections. Although she had been involved with Jesuit education for twenty-nine years, as both a student and faculty member, it was her experiences in El Salvador hearing the many personal stories of the poor and suffering that helped her come to understand the Jesuit mission in a new way.

“What I needed was the experience to help me understand that a full commitment to the promotion of justice requires a leap of faith,” Freije wrote. “It requires attentiveness to something beyond what we can reach by reason alone. It requires both intellect and imagination. It requires an ability to engage mind and heart.”
