College Submits Encouraging Progress Report on Carbon Neutral Plan
Members of the Holy Cross Presidential Task Force on the Environment submitted a Carbon Neutral Plan Progress Report to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment on January 12. The report is an overview of the implementation to date of the College’s Climate Action Plan, submitted in fulfillment of ACUPCC requirements.
The report states that the College is on its way to becoming carbon neutral by the year 2040, with a 28 percent decrease in greenhouse gas gross emissions between the baseline year (fiscal year 2007) and the most recent published inventory year (fiscal year 2010).
The Presidential Task Force on the Environment is responsible for overseeing the College’s response to the President’s Climate Commitment, under the leadership of selected faculty, students and staff.
“When adjusting for building area and annual weather conditions, preliminary calculations indicate a steady year-on-year decrease in the campus carbon footprint,” the progress report reads. “This has been accomplished through several initiatives: purchase of low carbon electricity, fuel switching, new building construction to LEED specifications, and implementation of a multitude of energy efficiency projects.”
Since fiscal year 2007, Holy Cross has implemented approximately 40 energy projects which have contributed to the campus-wide greenhouse gas reductions. Approximately 26 additional projects are currently planned but not yet implemented.
