'Take the economists out to the ballgame'

The Orange County Register

In an Orange County Register article examining the economic benefits to cities with major league baseball teams, Victor Matheson, associate professor of economics at the College of the Holy Cross—who has done extensive research proving there is little to no economic boost for host cities with professional sports franchises—explains that the real value of a team is how it can serve as a branding vehicle, something that the Angels have struggled to use to their advantage.

“It is the value of branding. It is always argued that a team can put a city on the map,” he said. “That's certainly true for Green Bay, Wis., with the (National Football League) Packers.”

However, he pointed out, “That's certainly not true of the second-largest metropolitan area of the United States. Anaheim gets more branding from Disneyland than the Angels.”
