Holy Cross to Host National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference

More than 300 students from 26 Jesuit schools to volunteer in Worcester

More than 300 students and professionals from Jesuit institutions across the nation will travel to the College of the Holy Cross to take part in the 2012 National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference (NJSLC) July 25-29. Over the course of the five days, attendees will participate in a series of leadership sessions, excursions and speaking events centered on a theme familiar to the Holy Cross community, “Live the Mission.”

“The theme of ‘Live the Mission,’ plays a pivotal role in the lives of Holy Cross students,” shares Sara Swillo, co-advisor of the conference and associate director of student involvement. “Holy Cross encourages students to clearly see the wholeness of their educational experience and we hope that by hosting NJSLC 2012, we can showcase the best of Holy Cross to other Jesuit institutions.”

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the College’s Co-curricular Cornerstones: Reflective Habits, Community and Citizenship, Cura Personalis (Care for the Entire Person) and Multicultural Competency. Events for the conference were designed around these cornerstones and include an impressive program of motivational speakers including Rev. James Martin, S.J., a Jesuit priest, culture editor of America magazine, and bestselling author of “The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything” and “My Life with the Saints”; Michael Miller, leadership trainer, consultant, and motivational speaker; and Shiva Subbaraman, from Georgetown University.

The conference ends with a day focused on service. On July 28, students and staff will take part volunteering at different Worcester area organizations including Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Barber Ave., Veteran’s Inc. on Canterbury and Grove St., the Canal District Alliance, and the Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Mass.
