Holy Cross to Inaugurate Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., as 32nd President of the College

The College of the Holy Cross will inaugurate Rev. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., as the 32nd president of the College on Friday, Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. at a ceremony in the Francis Hart, S.J. Recreation Center on the campus.

Fr. Boroughs was elected by the College’s Board of Trustees in May of last year to succeed Rev. Michael C. McFarland, S.J., who retired after a successful 12-year presidency. Prior to taking office at Holy Cross in January 2012, Fr. Boroughs served as vice president for mission and ministry at Georgetown University where he was responsible for numerous programs for faculty, staff, students, and alumni which advanced Catholic and Jesuit identity.

The inauguration is part of a three-day campus-wide celebration that includes an Inauguration Faculty Symposium on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 3:30 p.m. in the Main Reading Room of the Dinand Library. Titled “Imagining Teaching and Learning at a Jesuit, Liberal Arts College in the 21st Century,” the Holy Cross panelists include Robert Bellin, associate professor of biology; Ericka Fisher, associate professor of education; and Jonathan Mulrooney, associate professor of English. Guest panelists include Sr. Janet Eisner, president, Emmanuel College; Nathan Hatch, president, Wake Forest University; and Daniel Porterfield, president, Franklin & Marshall College. A reception will follow in the Integrated Science Complex.

The inauguration Mass will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel.  Fr. Boroughs will serve as principal celebrant, and the Mass will be concelebrated by Jesuit provincials, Very Rev. Myles N. Sheehan, S.J., of New England; and Very Rev. Patrick J. Lee, S.J., of Oregon (Fr. Boroughs’ home province); Most Rev. Robert J. McManus, bishop of Worcester; and Most. Rev. Daniel P. Reilly, bishop emeritus of Worcester; and members of the Holy Cross Jesuit community. Rev. Paul S. Harman, S.J., Holy Cross’ vice president for mission, will be the homilist.

The inauguration ceremony will begin with a procession of Holy Cross faculty and more than 100 presidents and delegates from colleges and universities across the United States.  John J. DeGioia, president of Georgetown University, will deliver the inaugural address; and P. Kevin Condron ’67, chair of the Board of Trustees, will preside at the presidential installation.

Reflecting Fr. Boroughs’ interest in the inauguration being a celebration of the entire Holy Cross community, students will have a prominent presence at the festivities. Student Government Association co-chairs, Kate Shea ’13 and Paul Misci ’13, will deliver greetings, and student musicians will perform at both the Mass and inauguration ceremony.  In addition, a student-planned celebration will take place on campus the evening of Saturday, Sept. 15, following the Holy Cross vs. Brown football game.
