'Tampa Leaders Ecstatic About Results of RNC'

Associated Press

In an Associated Press article, Victor Matheson, associate professor of economics at the College of the Holy Cross, commented on the impact of the Republican National Convention on the city of Tampa, and addressed whether the success of such a large-scale event might lead to future economic growth, as local government officials are predicting.

“I don’t know of a single corporation moving their headquarters to a city because of an RNC,” he said, in response to Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn’s claims that the convention would draw new businesses to the area. He also added that because of the city’s increase in traffic, “regular activity and regular tourism disappears,” resulting in fewer benefits to the local economy.
