Inauguration: Greetings From the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

By Timothy P. Murray

Bishop McManus, Father Boroughs, distinguished guests, and members of the Holy Cross Community: it is my honor to bring greetings to Holy Cross and its 32nd president on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and its residents.

We are blessed in this state with more than 130 colleges and universities, representing the entire spectrum of higher education, and serving hundreds of thousands of men and women pursuing an extraordinary range of studies.  Among our prestigious institutes of world class education, the College of the Holy Cross occupies a privileged position.  It is the oldest Catholic college in Massachusetts, indeed in all of New England, and the only Jesuit college in the United States devoted exclusively to the education of undergraduates.  Ever since its first graduating class in the mid-1800s, Holy Cross has educated leaders in public service, education, medicine, law, and civic life.  Your graduates have shaped history and have helped make the Commonwealth an even better place to live, work, and raise families.

The state of Massachusetts, our nation, and our world are grateful for the men and women Holy Cross has and will continue produce.

Father Boroughs, Governor Patrick and I have every confidence that you will carry on this College’s proud tradition of success, and we look forward to working with you and the Holy Cross Community in the months and years ahead.

Timothy P. Murray is lieutenant governor of Massachusetts.
