'How Holy Cross is Managing the Growth of BYOD'

EdTech

In a recent article in EdTech, Patrick Gemme, technical services engineer at the College of the Holy Cross, commented on the influx in wireless Internet traffic on the Hill, and how the increase in mobile units will impact the way in which the College plans to adjust its IT strategy.

“The number of devices on our network has increased threefold in just three years,” said Gemme. “Today, we’re managing 3,000 wireless devices at any one time, compared with 1,000 a few years ago.”

Gemme also noted that each faculty member, staff member, and student brings, on average, three mobile devices to campus: tablets, smartphones, and e-readers.

In order to keep up with this technology boom, Gemme explained that the College plans to upgrade their current IT system to Aruba ClearPass mobile device management software. Among the many advantages of the software, Gemme highlighted the expected increase in usability and safety.

“We’re trying to make it easier for users,” he said. “With ClearPass, everyone can access the Internet…[and] it will [be] much harder to hack in.”
