'History of Church of the End Times outside the norm'

Telegram & Gazette

In an article in the Telegram & Gazette, Mathew Schmalz, associate professor of religious studies at the College of the Holy Cross, commented on the Christian Church of the End Times of Uxbridge, Mass., which is facing legal problems, as well as allegations that it functions like a cult.

Addressing the recent controversy surrounding the church, Schmalz explained that the Church of End Times has much in common with other “Millienialistic” sects, but warns that with small religious groups “things can go off the rails rather quickly.”   One of the problems, he explained is that leader can actually “becom[e] the message.”

"The group leader’s desires and feelings become automatically the word of God,” he said.
