In the Washington Post’s Answer Sheet blog, Jack Schneider, assistant professor of education at the College of the Holy Cross, shared an excerpt from his recent book, “Excellence For All: How a New Breed of Reformers Is Transforming America’s Public Schools” (Vanderbilt University Press, 2011).
In his book, Schneider, who specializes in educational policy and the history of education, explains how Teach For America has become such an esteemed program. “Getting the right teachers in the classroom has been a major part of the school reform agenda for as long as policy makers have sought systematic change in education,” he writes.
“Teach For America was neither alone nor even the first in answering the call to recruit teachers in the excellence for all era. With time, however, it would become the most visible, as well as the only truly national response.”
