'College students spend Spring Break in Suffolk'

Fox 43

Highlighting the College of the Holy Cross Spring Break Immersion Program, Virginia’s Fox 43 featured a group of Holy Cross students, who had made the 14-hour trip to the city of Suffolk in the name of community service.

The students spent significant time refurbishing several houses, and also renovating the Macedonia A.M.E. church. Abigail Hynes-Houston ’14, who participated in the immersion trip, said, “It’s been such a rewarding experience,” and Andrew McAward ’15 echoed the sentiment, saying, “I could be sitting on a beach or relaxing, but I think that probably this is the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done in my entire life and I’m 100% positive I want to do this again next year.”

Derrell Wade, pastor of the Macedonia A.M.E. church, explained that the Holy Cross students were a “blessing,” and that he “wouldn’t have been able to get so much done so quickly with [their] help.”

Each year, students from the College travel to various locations across the nation for the week of spring break to work on home repair, to assist the elderly and to learn about different cultures and regions. This year, 290 students worked in 25 locations across 12 states.
