Swim Across America Bonds Swimming & Diving Teams

The transition to college can be a difficult one, especially as a student-athlete. Freshmen are anxious about classes, meeting new people and competing at the college level. The Holy Cross swimming and diving teams participated in a great event in order to establish a team bond right from the beginning of the year. Nothing quite says, "Welcome to Holy Cross!" like a one-mile swim along the shore of Narragansett Beach.

On Sept. 6, both the men and women's swimming and diving teams traded the Hart Center Pool for the cold, rough Atlantic Ocean and participated in the Rhode Island Open Swim to benefit cancer research. This year marked the third straight year the Crusaders swam in the event, making it truly a staple event of the program. The Crusaders have continued to raise the bar as their fundraising has increased from $6,000 to over $18,000 over the last three years.

Senior captain, Michael Noone (Stamford, Conn.), recognizes the importance of the event as a chance for the 18 freshmen to dive right into the Holy Cross swim program. "It is usually hard for them to transition to college, but with the Swim Across America event being the first weekend of school, it is a great bonding experience," reflected Noone. Anna Villani (Hanover, Mass), another senior captain on the team, felt the swim provided a common cause for the athletes to rally around.  "Cancer is a cause that everyone is connected to," said Villani. "Everyone had their own reason to be there and everyone had their own special someone in mind. We were all swimming for the same common bond."
