‘Worcester storm cleanup is a slog’

Telegram & Gazette

With the snowfall finally coming to a halt, a recent Telegram & Gazette article spotlights maintenance workers as they worked diligently across Worcester to clear one of the largest snowstorms in state history.

The article highlights Ted W. Heywood, grounds supervisor for the College of the Holy Cross, who says he and his staff worked very hard the last few days to clear the snow and keep the campus safe.

“Up on the top of the hill, 10 minutes later, what you plowed is all blown black,” Heywood says of the defeating wind factor.

It took a monumental effort of 15 of the College’s employees and more than 50 hired hands to get the campus ready for business Wednesday. The College is responsible for plowing 5.4 miles of roads, 4.5 miles of sidewalks, 20 acres of parking lots and nearly 200 staircases.

“The entire campus is basically five terraces on the side of the hill, so steps are a part of every journey you take,” says Heywood.
