Crusaders to Bench for a Cure on Dec. 11

Holy Cross Lift Strong

The eighth annual Benching for Breast Cancer fundraising event will take place on Friday, Dec. 11, at 5:30 p.m. in the Hart Center varsity weight room at the College of the Holy Cross. Registration costs $10 and will start at 5:00 p.m.

Benching for Breast Cancer is a weight lifting contest held between teams of four students. All team members bench as much weight as they can and their totals will then be mathematically compared with their body weights in order to determine the winning team. There are prizes for the most benched male and female teams as well as prizes for best costume, most enthusiastic, and most fundraised. The traditional candle light ceremony held halfway through the event will allow students the opportunity to reflect and remember those who lost their battle to breast cancer and celebrate survivors and those who continue to fight.

The co-chairs for HC for a Cure in charge of the event, Matthew Liguori ’17 and Emma O’Brien ’18 both expressed their excitement for this year’s Bench for a Cure, particularly after last year’s record-breaking participation of 610 students. “Benching is the largest event that we host every year and I think that it has become an incredible way to involve a large portion of the student body,” O’Brien said. Linguori echoed this sentiment, saying, “The atmosphere in the varsity weight room last year was incredible. To see our campus community gathered together for one cause was amazing.”

All the money raised from the event will benefit Pink Revolution, a Worcester-based breast cancer alliance.
