‘Sea change: Holy Cross show looks at our impact on nature’

Telegram & Gazette

A recent article in the Telegram & Gazette detailed how Alexa Horochowski’s “Club Disminución,” the current exhibit in the Cantor Art Gallery, is wowing the Holy Cross community.

The artwork, some of which was created with three-dimensional videos, captivated gallery attendees like Daina Cheyenne Harvey, assistant professor of sociology at Holy Cross.

“I sat in front of them for about an hour with the artist and two colleagues that I have great respect for, and I could barely pay attention to anything other than the video,” Harvey said in the article.

The article also noted that Cristi Rinklin, associate professor of visual arts and a member of this year’s Arts Transcending Borders (ATB) steering committee, felt Horochowski’s work, which addresses themes of environmental impact and globalized cultural consumption, would fit well into ATB’s 2015-16 theme of "Gravity and Grace; The Intersection between Arts and Science."

"I have always admired the seemingly limitless range of skills she is able to employ in her work, from photography to sculpture to painting," Rinklin said. "This body of work was the first time I had seen her videos of the cochayuyo kelp, and the mysterious, beautiful and threatening quality of them absolutely blew me away."
