Helping Holy Cross students become their best selves: 50% participation = $500,000

Each year, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Holy Cross community, the College is able to provide opportunities for students to discover their talents and prepare for the future. As the College nears the end of its fiscal year, we would like to introduce you to a few Holy Cross students becoming their “best selves” thanks to your generous support.

"Participating in Holy Cross’ Russian language immersion trip was life-changing," says Michael Morigi ’19, a political science and economics double major from New York City. "Living in Moscow for six weeks, I learned about Russian culture and history, and improved my language skills by having classes for 20 hours a week. Through contacts I met at Holy Cross, I also visited the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and spent an hour with Foreign Service Officers. This meeting opened my eyes to the exciting life of the Foreign Service, and pushed me to research potential internships with the State Department, a place where I believe I can have an impact on the world and serve my country."

Jewel Duberry-Douglas ’18, a political science major from Quincy, Mass., agrees that the abundance of experiential learning opportunities offered by the College has been a great help in planning for the future.

"I participated in the Lindsay Fellowship program last summer," says Duberry-Douglas, "getting a first-hand look at a career in law. I interned under a federal judge and worked alongside attorneys in the U.S. Federal Defender's Office. This year, I participated in Holy Cross’ Non-Profit Careers Conference, which allowed me to network and see the different paths I can take to achieve my goals."

For Carson Marsh '17, an economics major from Marshfield, Mass., it was the College’s dynamic “Financial Boot Camp” program that helped him refine and pursue his dreams. "The Finance Boot Camp had a direct impact on my internship application process," explains Marsh. "The exposure to the banking industry helped me land a summer analyst position in investment banking."

Dimitri Savidis ’18, an economics and history double major from Worcester, Mass., says it was his experience in the Big Apple — and the renowned and loyal Holy Cross alumni network — that opened his eyes to future possibilities.

"In the New York City Semester Away Program," says Savidis, "I worked directly under two Holy Cross alumni who integrated me into their projects and gave me room to take on greater responsibilities in strategy development. I networked with some of the company’s brightest minds and had the opportunity to engage directly with clients. Although I consider myself a typical liberal arts student in my academic and intellectual interests, I see myself enjoying and thriving in a career that puts both my qualitative and quantitative skills to the test."

"At Holy Cross, I have been challenged to think critically about the many serious social problems facing our world today," says Grace Mascha '19, a biology major from Cleveland, Ohio, who explains that a classical liberal arts education instilled in her essential critical thinking and communication skills. "The variety of classes that I have been able to take has made me appreciate more fully the value of a liberal arts education," says Mascha, "and every day I am grateful for everything that I have been able to learn here."

“The Holy Cross community, and in particular, the alumni, are famously loyal and generous,” says Tracy Barlok, vice president for advancement. “Our donors express their passion for the College's mission in very real and effective ways. It’s this support that makes us so successful at what we do. Because of our donors, we are able to change lives for the better every day.” This year, a group of alumni stepped forward to challenge the whole alumni body. If we can achieve 50% participation they will give the College an additional $500,000.
