The No. 2 seeded Holy Cross baseball team (32-20), seeking its first Patriot League title, will play No. 1 seeded Army (39-12) in a best-of-three series beginning with two games Sunday (noon, 2:30). If Game 3 is necessary, it will be at 1 p.m. Monday. The winner of the championship series takes home the Patriot League crown and earns a bid into a NCAA baseball regional.

This is the second appearance that the Crusaders are making over a three year span in the Patriot League championship series. The team has made four Patriot League tournament appearances in five seasons.

On May 12, Holy Cross topped Navy in back-to-back games to advance past the semifinal round, winning by scores of 1-0 and 4-2. No. 1 seed Army swept No. 4 seed Lafayette on that same Saturday, winning out 8-7 and 6-3.

Courtney Lesoon ’12, an art history major with a self-created Middle Eastern Studies minor from Pittsburgh, has received a Fulbright grant to travel to the United Arab Emirates during the 2012-13 academic year. She will investigate perceptions of the Middle East as expressed in its exported visual culture. Her research will take place in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.

Lesoon aims to answer two mains questions through her research: What demands does the art market make on artists in the UAE, and how do these demands impact the type of the production called “contemporary art from the Middle East?” Her research will be comprised of a series of personal interviews, formal art historical analyses of contemporary art for sale, and auction results and gallery prices.

Following the Fulbright, Lesoon intends to continue her studies of Islamic art by pursuing a master of arts followed by a Ph.D. in Islamic art history.

At Holy Cross, Lesoon was a senior advisor of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship, participant in Model United Nations, and a student “captain” in Kimball Dining Hall.

Each year approximately 1,000 college students are awarded grants through the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship program in international educational exchange. Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. Since the program’s inception in 1946, more than 300,000 participants — chosen for their leadership potential — have had the opportunity to observe each other’s political, economic and cultural institutions.

Joseph Cavanaugh ’12, of Plymouth, Mass., has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Madrid, where he will teach English to Spanish high school students. A political science major, he also plans to pursue his interest in international politics while in Spain.

“Taking classes examining Spanish policies — especially those in regard to combating international terrorism, poverty, and unemployment — could significantly enhance my worldview and add to my understanding of similar problems in the United States,” Cavanaugh said. “Given the fact that the United States has just recently begun developing policies on how to handle terrorist attacks on their own soil, for example, it has a significant amount to learn from Spain, a country that has been formulating strategies to counter separatist groups for years.”

Cavanaugh is interested in pursuing a career in public service.

“I think that the Fulbright is an exceptional opportunity for me to enrich my perspective so that I may be more effective in politics or policy-making upon my return to the U.S., enabling me to build bridges both between countries and within communities,” he said.

At Holy Cross, Cavanaugh was a member of the College Honors Program and Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He was involved in the Student Government Association, and held a variety of class officer positions, most recently vice president of the senior class. As a participant in the College’s Washington Semester Program during the fall of 2010, he interned at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a bi-partisan foreign policy think tank, where he worked in the Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Program.

“Thanks to the great service opportunities that Holy Cross provides, I’ve also been given the opportunity to volunteer in the past at Woodland Academy, a Worcester school comprised of 70 percent Latino students. In addition, I was fortunate enough to have the chance to travel with classmates to Tanzania during July of 2010 to assist in the construction of an education center being built for children of AIDS victims,” he said.

Each year approximately 1,000 college students are awarded grants through the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship program in international educational exchange.
In an article on Bloomberg.com, Victor Matheson, associate professor of economics, discusses the overlooked costs that Indiana has incurred as a result of hosting the 2012 Super Bowl. Matheson emphasizes that the budget for the Super Bowl is just one aspect of the total expenses of hosting the sporting event, but it is also important to examine the cost of the newly built stadium as well.

“The budget for the Super Bowl is a fairly small component of the expenditures of the Super Bowl,” said Matheson. “The big expenditure component is the fact that Indianapolis had to build a brand new, almost entirely taxpayer-financed stadium to have any chance to attract the Super Bowl in the first place.”

Kenneth Calemmo

Kenneth Calemmo, a member of the College of the Holy Cross class of 2012, from Sea Isle City, N.J., has been awarded the George B. Moran Award, the highest award given by the College to a graduating senior in recognition of exemplary scholarship and leadership.

Calemmo, who serves as director of community relations for the Student Government Association (SGA), also recently received a “Key to the City” from Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty, an honor given for Calemmo’s work in the Worcester community; and was the recipient of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium (COWC) Student Community Engagement Award.

As the leader of Student Ambassadors Developing External Relations (S.A.D.E.R.), a group which works to improve the relationship between Holy Cross students and residents of the College Hill and South Worcester neighborhoods, Calemmo’s many accomplishments include leading the charge at Nelson Place School to raise $5,318 for its new automated library system; organizing the Canal District Alliance/Blackstone River Bank clean up on McKeon Road as part of Holy Cross Cares Day; running a tutoring program for neighborhood children living on College Hill; and organizing many events for the neighbors and students on College Hill including barbeques, Trick or Treating, a food and clothing drive, a Christmas house decorating contest and a Christmas dinner party.

“The people of Worcester show a tremendous dedication and commitment to their city. It is something that I have always found to be very impressive,” share Calemmo. “Many spend their entire careers working hard to improve the quality of life for others, and I think that is something to be truly admired. I have found great partners throughout Worcester working in the public school system, businesses and restaurants, for no other reason than wanting to make this city the best place to live. It has been a true honor and privilege to work and volunteer alongside such wonderful and committed people. I feel truly blessed to have called this place my home for the past four years.”

A classics major with an art history minor, Calemmo is also the chair of the Worcester Intercollegiate Government Association. On campus, he is an admissions tour guide, involved in liturgical ministry as a lector, and is in the Classics Honor Society (Eta Sigma Phi).

“Ken’s commitment to the Worcester community, especially our neighbors on College Hill, has been remarkable,” explains Edward Augustus, director of government and community relations at the College. “He works tirelessly on projects to engage the College and Worcester communities—whether it’s raising thousands of dollars for a local school or holding a barbeque for neighbors—he is always up for the task.”

After graduation, Calemmo will serve for two years in the Greater Philadelphia Corps through Teach for America, in Camden, N.J., where he will teach elementary school. He will also work towards a master’s degree in urban education at the University of Pennsylvania.

“I hope to ultimately have a career in higher education, public service or the non-profit sector, working on issues of community relations, community development and education reform. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to work with students as well leading members of the community. I hope that my journey will someday bring me back to Worcester,” he says.

Moran was a member of the Holy Cross class of 1906 and later built Kimball Dining Hall, where he worked as a supervisor and buyer from 1935-55. The George B. Moran Award was established in 1965 by the Textile Veterans Association.

Nine other students received the 2012 Presidential Service Award for their service and contributions to the College and greater Worcester community.

Recipients will be honored at the Awards Ceremony on May 24 at 12:30 p.m. in the Dinand Library Main Reading Room.

Tim Beekman ’15, an accounting major from Basking Ridge, N.J., has received a place on a Fulbright Summer Institute to study at Newcastle University in England from July 8 to August 13. The Fulbright Summer Institute is one of the most prestigious and selective summer scholarship programs operating worldwide.

He is among six participants from universities across the United States who will spend four weeks studying how the European economy fits into the global picture. The program, titled “Doing Business in Europe,” will involve courses focused on understanding European business strategies, identifying the cultural differences that exist between Europe, America, and Asia, and exploring European Union Regulations and their relationship to business.

Students in the program will also visit key sites in Edinburgh, York, Hadrian’s Wall, and Lindisfarne. Beekman, who has never been on an airplane before, is particularly excited for the opportunity to see England and develop his global aptitude.

At Holy Cross, Beekman is a member of the prebusiness program, Mulledy House Council and Finance Club. He also volunteers in the Office of Admissions as a greeter. He plans to pursue an M.B.A. after his time at Holy Cross.

Beekman was selected from a strong applicant pool. The Fulbright commission selects participants through a rigorous application and interview process. In making these awards, the commission looks not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Program and a plan to give back to the recipient’s home country upon returning.

Created by treaty in 1948, the U.S.-U.K. Fulbright Commission is the only bi-lateral,
transatlantic scholarship program, offering awards and summer programs for study or research in any field, at any accredited U.S. or U.K. university. The commission is part of the Fulbright program conceived by Senator J. William Fulbright.

The U.K. Summer Institutes are a new initiative, designed to introduce students to the United Kingdom, while also developing their academic skills and encouraging leadership.

The Nativity School of Worcester’s Crusaders Musical Outreach Program, which started as an observation for Legare, transformed into a weekly program, in which Legare and five other Holy Cross students instruct personalized musical lessons after school.

According to the reporter: “To Mr. Legare, it’s the fun of teaching something he loves to kids who are excited and enthusiastic as well, but he’s also aware, as are the Nativity School faculty and staff, that the program is adding something valuable to the middle schoolers’ education.”

Eco-Action, a student-run environmental group at the College of the Holy Cross, will sponsor “Trash or Treasure,” from Friday, May 11 to Wednesday, May 16. Donations will be accepted until Tuesday, May 15 and picked up on May 16. The “Trash or Treasure” movement encourages students to leave unwanted items, such as lamps, office supplies, clothing, and books, in designated areas in their residence halls. Rather than ending up in the trash, all unwanted belongings will be collected and redistributed to Worcester-area organizations including the Salvation Army and the Worcester Refugee Assistance Project.

The event, which is entirely student-run, began four years ago as an effort to reduce the amount of waste that is produced when students move out of their residence halls.

Last year, they opened the program to seniors living off-campus. It was so successful, that this year Eco-Action has arranged for a Salvation Army trailer to be on campus after Commencement for students to donate items.

Eco-Action strongly encourages students to not only to recycle, but to also self-assess their daily wasteful habits. Vivian Daley ’12, co-chair of Eco-Action, says, “This year, in addition to collecting donations, we would really like to educate the student body about reducing their waste. We hope that people take a look at what they’re donating and begin to evaluate if they are making good decisions when purchasing items.”
