Holy Cross Mock Trial Team Earns Bid at National Championship Tournament

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross Mock Trial team, only in its second year of existence, has been awarded a bid to the gold level of the National Championship Tournament this April in the Iowa Supreme Courthouse.

The invitation to the national championship was secured last weekend when the Holy Cross team went 6-2 in a competition at Utica College.

Of the 250 mock trial teams from colleges and universities throughout the United States, only the top three were awarded bids to the gold level of the national championship.  The 4th and 5th place teams in each region advance to the silver level and the top four teams from this competition advance to the national championship.

Three members of the Holy Cross team were also recognized for their performances. Pedro Figueroa of the Class of 1999, and Ryan Hayward, a member of the Class of 2001, were chosen as two of the top 10 attorneys in the competition.  First-year student Caitlin Donahue was recognized as one of the top 10 witnesses.

The team is coached by local attorneys Ed McDermott and Carey Smith, both members of the Holy Cross Class of 1979.
