Ballet Folklorico Mexico to Perform at Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Ballet Folklorico Mexico de Los Hermanos Avila will perform on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Hogan Campus Center at Holy Cross.  The performance is free and open to the public.

Recognized by U.S. and Mexican officials as one of the most exciting groups presenting authentic regional dances of Mexico, the group was founded in 1972 by Carmen and Jesus Avila, who still perform with the company.

The company, which "weaves history with rhythm and seduces the senses with sights and sounds, from the thunderous opening to its climatic closing," was created not only to preserve Mexican folk dances, but also to provide the opportunity to appreciate diversity among cultures.

The program, which transcends cultural influences from around the world, includes historic dances from Azteca, Michoacan, Guerrero, Sonoro, Jalisco, and other regions of Mexico.  These regional dances reflect the tradition of a country where many groups were physically isolated from one another, yet shared language and spirit.  Dances are also dedicated to the "soldaderas," the women who supported and fought alongside the men during the Mexican Revolution.

The performance is sponsored by the Campus Activity Board (CAB) and Latin American Student Organization (LASO) in celebration of Latin Heritage Month.
