Holy Cross Equestrian Club Rides to the Top

Club members Lauren Duffee '09 and Carrie Schwartz '10 enjoy success

Riding boots are not just a fashion fad on Mount St. James. They are also a staple in the team apparel of the Holy Cross Equestrian Club, which ranked third overall in the Hunter Seat Standings of Zone 1, Region 3 teams for the fall 2009 season.

Competing within the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, the Holy Cross Equestrian Club offers spots for riders of all skill levels to compete in New England. While the emphasis in this association is on learning, sportsmanship and fun, Holy Cross team members have exhibited talent in earning several personal records. Notably, this past season Carrie Schwartz ’10 was a regional qualifier for the Novice Equitation Over Fences and Lauren Duffee ’09 earned second place in the open rider standings.

Without a farm or stable on campus, team members take lessons at Woodgate Farm in nearby West Boylston. Members are required to take a single one hour lesson per week with two or three teammates of the same skill level.

Typically, riders who choose to participate, compete (or “show”) three or four times per semester against the other Zone 1, Region 3 schools. This region includes Amherst College, Assumption College, Becker College, Clark University, Hampshire College, Landmark College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Westfield State College and Williams College.

Some of the schools that Holy Cross riders show with (Mount Holyoke, for example) have established equestrian teams as varsity level sports. Considering Holy Cross’ team welcomes all members who wish to join, their accomplishments in this competitive region are especially noteworthy.

The team’s accomplishments are fostered by a relaxed environment where riders from beginners to advanced can learn and showcase their individual talents. This is a reflection of the coaching methods of trainer Frank Perla, a knowledgeable and accomplished rider himself.

“[Perla] is a very easygoing, fun trainer who will joke around with you but still expects you to take your lessons seriously if you want to improve,” says Stephanie Singer ’11.

Emily Pearce ’11 added, “Being a part of the team is a great way to make new friends and bond with people over a common interest … the lessons are definitely a relaxing and fun way to get off campus.”

Following their successful fall season, the club members will be back in action this spring with four competitions, one of which they will host at Windcrest Farm in Hebron, Conn. on March 27.
